What’s Inside Your Mattress?

The materials inside your mattress affect it how it feels and how long it lasts, so it’s important to understand your options.

For decades, most mattresses were constructed of an innerspring, topped with various types of padding. But today, you’ve got gel-infused memory foams, moisture-regulating fabrics, carbon-steel coils and numerous other materials, available across a wide range of mattress types.

The good news is: you don’t need to be a mattress scientist to get a great night sleep. You just need to know some basics.

  1. Box Spring Mattresses

The box spring, also known as the foundation, sits underneath your mattress. It plays an important role in supporting the full width of your mattress and ensuring its longevity. This is why manufacturers strongly encourage buying your mattress and box spring together—they’re designed to work in unison. Today, most box springs do not actually have springs, but instead use a sturdy wood framework, which is topped with flat board and lightly upholstered. An adjustable foundation is another option for those who do a lot of reading or watching TV in bed.

  2. Innerspring Mattresses

Most modern mattresses are still made with an innerspring system, typically made of thin metal. Some use a continuous coil system; others use independent coils. New innovations from Englander use ultra-lightweight carbon steel, which flexes more freely, and is arranged head-to-toe to reduce motion between partners. This can be found in the mattresses shopping section that we offer at Ben’s.

  3. Traditional Foam & Fiber Layers of A Mattress

Your mattress’s innerspring system typically has several layers of foam on top and underneath. The most immediate layers are usually high-density foams designed to provide a supportive base for the other layers. This incorporates numerous foam and fiber layers to create the perfect amount of cushioning, in addition to other benefits, like improved air flow, temperature regulation and fire blocking.

  4. Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam is unique from other foams in that it gently conforms to your body. This helps to greatly reduce the pressure points that cause tossing at night. It also distributes your weight evenly, ensuring proper sleep posture. Memory foam is typically incorporated as one of the top layers of the mattress (see our Oxford Box Top Mattress for example). Some mattresses are made with a memory foam core, instead of an innerspring. In other cases, mattresses are made with other types of foam cores, but then topped with memory foam. Some manufacturers are now using gel-infused memory foam for even better pressure-point relief without the heat build-up that traditional memory foams are known for.

  5. Quilting of a Mattress

The “quilt” is the very top layer of the mattress, consisting of the fabric itself, sometimes with additional foam layers encased inside. Mattresses like our Nottingham Pillow Top use a moisture-wicking fabric that ensures a dryer, cooler sleep surface.

  6. Featherbed Mattresses

Featherbeds, contrary to their names, are not actually beds. They’re bedding, made with feathers, down or a mixture of materials, which you add on top of your mattress to make it softer – kind of like lying on a tick comforter.

  7. Waterbed Mattresses

The 70s may be long gone, but believe it or not, you can still buy water beds. Newer water-based mattresses incorporate multiple fiber and vinyl layers to reduce “waves” and provide more support than older styles. Just keep the scissors away!

Mattress Showdown: Memory Foam vs. Pillow Top

What are your options if you love sinking into a deliciously soft bed every night? What’s the closest you can get to actually sleeping on a cloud?

For sleepers who love a plush bed, we typically recommend two options: pillow tops and memory foam mattresses. Both do a great job of relieving the pressure points that cause tossing and turning. But there are some big differences between the two.

Memory Foam Mattresses

A memory foam mattress is made with a foam core, instead of a metal innerspring system. What makes memory foam unique is the way it conforms to your body when you lie down. It compresses in reaction to pressure and cradles every inch of your body. When you rise, it regains its shape.

Memory foam also helps to disperse your weight evenly, which results in the exceptional pressure-point relief. Traditionally, tossing and turning is caused when there’s a buildup of pressure underneath part of your body. Commonly, it’s your back, arms, neck or hips that start to ache, because the mattress isn’t providing even support. Memory foam helps prevent this problem by conforming to your body and providing more gentle support from head to toe.

Memory foam can actually feel somewhat firm in comparison to a plush pillow top. But there are lots of options to choose from. Englander’s Constitution Mattress and Yellowstone Mattress are made with varying numbers of additional foam layers on top of the core, which allows you to choose the level of softness that you prefer.

Advantages of Memory Foam Mattresses:

  • Great pressure-point relief for reducing tossing at night
  • Even weight distribution
  • Ideal sleeping posture

Disadvantages of Memory Foam Mattresses:

  • Some foam mattresses feel hotter at night because the foam retains heat
  • Foams must have a high enough density to support your weight; otherwise it may feel like you’re sinking into the mattress

Pillow Top Mattresses

A pillow top is typically an innerspring mattress that has additional foam layers sewn onto the top. Most pillow tops are constructed with several foam layers on top of the innerspring (just like a traditional innerspring mattress), then topped with even more layers inside the “pillow.”

The number of layers and types of foam used will affect the level of softness. Many styles, like Leeds Pillowtop Mattress, also incorporate memory foam to create the cradling feel of a foam mattress but with the extra support foam-encased wrapped coil support system .

Whereas a memory foam mattress can feel like you’re sleeping on a cozy layer of encased quicksand, a plush pillow top mattress can feel like you’re sleeping on a big, flat, super-soft pillow. But again, the exact level of softness and support depends on the materials used. Pillow tops can be firm or plush, so always ask what’s inside.

Advantages of Pillow Top Mattresses:

  • Cloud-like surface softness, combined with pressure-point relief
  • High-quality innersprings are great at isolating motion (so when your partner turns, you stay asleep)
  • Some pillow tops are designed to dissipate heat, so you sleep cooler

Disadvantages of Pillow Top Mattresses:

  • Frequent rotating is sometimes recommended to help the pillow top retain its shape
  • Some pillow tops may experience “sagging” faster than a traditional non-pillow top

So, What’s Better: Memory Foam or Pillow Top?

Which style comes out on top of this mattress showdown: memory foam or a pillow top? The answer is: only you can decide!

Each person’s sleep habits are unique making your mattress de. You may discover you love the feel of memory foam, while someone else may prefer a pillow top. To determine which is right for you, consider the advantages and disadvantages of each, but most importantly: try them out in-person to see which feels cozier to you.

Not All Mattresses are Created Equal: A Guide to Mattress Types

Innersprings, Pillow Tops, Memory Foam—Oh My!

When it comes to buying a mattress, you have a surprising number of mattress types to choose from. But finding the perfect one doesn’t need to be difficult. With some basic knowledge on the different types of mattresses we offer at Ben’s, it’s easy to create the bed of your dreams.

Here’s a handy guide to the most common types you’ll encounter when shopping:

  1. Innerspring / Coil

One mattress type, known as innerspring is pretty popular! Constructed with a framework of metal coils. Think of this as the supportive core of the mattress. The springs support the weight of your body while also gently conforming to it. Innerspring mattresses are topped with foam to create varying levels of softness. Typically, but not always, a firm mattress will have fewer of these layers than a plush mattress.

    Advantages of Innerspring/Coil Mattresses:

      • Many options and firmness levels to choose from
      • Good for sleepers who prefer the feel of a traditional mattress

  2. Foam Mattress

Another mattress type, known as the term “foam mattress”, is typically popular as well! It is used to describe a mattress that uses a foam core (often made of memory foam or latex), rather than an innerspring. Often, the foam core is also topped with additional foam layers to control the softness. Check out Ben’s where he offers a variety of foam mattresses!

    Advantages of Foam Mattresses:

      • Exceptional pressure-point relief and weight distribution
      • Good for sleepers who love the unique feel of memory foam

  3. Pillow Top

A pillow top mattress has additional layers of foam stitched onto the top of the mattress. This provides an extra level of cushioning to envelop the body. Keep in mind, not all pillow tops are designed to provide pillow-like softness all the way through. For example, you can have a firm mattress that’s also a pillow top. So always be sure to check the manufacturer’s softness level.

    Advantages of Pillow Top Mattresses:

      • Luxurious, body-conforming softness on the top layers of the mattress
      • Good for back and side sleepers, but often not stomach sleepers

  4. Box Top & Euro Top

Box top and Euro top mattresses are basically the same as pillow tops, except the tops are sewn to create a flush, uniform appearance with the rest of the mattress. These are usually some of the tallest mattresses on the market.

Advantages of Box Top & Euro Top Mattresses:

      • Layer after layer of lush cushioning, available in varying softness levels
      • Good for those who like a tall bed that’s fit for a king

  5. Adjustable Motion

Some mattresses and bed frames are adjustable, allowing you to vertically adjust the head and/or foot of the bed. This is ideal for those who do a lot of reading or watching TV in bed, or for those who have trouble with mobility.

    Advantages of Adjustable Motion Mattresses:

      • Easy, adjustable comfort for sleeping or sitting up in bed
      • Good for those who read or watch TV in bed

How to Choose the Right Mattress Size for You

Choosing the right mattress size is just as important as selecting the firmness. After all, what good is your blissfully cozy mattress if there’s not enough room for you and your partner?

A Simple “Mattress Size” Solution

If you want to be comfortable, night after night, you’ll want to have space to stretch out and move around, without your legs hanging off the bed or your elbows constantly knocking into your partner. On the other hand, if you sleep alone or prefer a smaller space for snuggling up, then you don’t want a mattress that’s too big.

Buying the perfect size mattress is easy when you know what to look for. At Ben’s, we have lots of mattress styles and sizes to fit every customer’s need. Let’s go over the basics to help you choose.

Mattress Dimensions

Did you know that a King bed is no longer than a Queen? Knowing the dimensions can help you to visualize the differences between various mattress sizes:

  • Twin: 39″W x 74″L
Good for bedrooms where space is limited, as well as guest bedrooms and kids’/teen bedrooms.
  • Twin XL: 39″W x 80″L
Six inches longer than a standard Twin, Twin XL is good for taller people and it’s the common size found in dorm rooms.
  • Full: 54″W x 74″L
Full mattresses can be ideal for sleeping alone or with a partner. Keep in mind, a Full bed is no longer than a Twin.
  • Queen: 60″W x 80″L
Queen beds are a step up from Full, ideal for couples or individuals who want a little more space.
  • King: 76″W x 80″L
At a foot and a half wider than Queen, King mattresses are noticeably larger. They offer lots of room for sprawling out, even for couples. However, remember that the length is the same as a Queen.
  • California King: 72″W x 84″L
California King mattresses offer four additional inches of length than a standard King, but they are also four inches narrower.

(Note: dimensions may vary slightly by manufacturer.)

A Mattress’s Height Matters Too

Taller mattresses are typically constructed with more layers of foam and other materials to enhance the comfort. A box top, for example, like our Manchester Box Top Mattress, combines gel-infused memory foam, high-density soft foam and a variety of other materials, resulting in a luxurious, exceptionally tall bed.

A pillowtop, like Englander’s Leeds Pillowtop Mattress, is another good option if you love having layer after layer of soft, supportive cushioning.

If you have trouble getting into higher beds, or prefer the look of a lower-height bed, try the Heritage Mattress, which is only about 8 inches thick, not including the box spring.

If you have a low-to-the-ground platform bed, be sure to take measurements to confirm what it can accommodate.

Fit For Guest Bedrooms

Full and Queen beds are common for guest rooms. But another versatile option is buying two twin beds. This allows you to have two separate beds, which can be placed together for couples to create the approximate width of a King bed!

8 Simple Tips for More Restful Sleep

We all know that sleep is incredibly important for your body; that’s why you spend one-third of your 24-hour day in bed. Without it, though, you’ll experience many negative effects, like foggy thinking, irritability, achy joints and muscles, and even nausea. If you’re experiencing insomnia or have no energy after a full night’s sleep.

Here Are Some Simple Tips to Help You Get A Restful Sleep:

  1. Buy A New Mattress

It may be time for you to purchase a new mattress. Your body changes as you age, so it makes sense that your mattress preferences change over time as well! Especially if your mattress is older than 5 years, a new mattress can dramatically increase the quality of your sleep. Recent advances in sleep science and mattress design allow you to fully customize your mattress to the exact specifications you’d like. Need a more firm cushion? Like to sleep with your head or legs elevated? Many mattress brands like Englander offer adjustable memory foam mattresses to keep you comfortable no matter what.

Buying a new mattress can be intimidating, but the mattress experts at Ben’s Furniture can help you find your perfect mattress so you can back to getting a full night of sleep in no time.

  2. Set The Mood

A half-hour before bedtime, turn down the lights in your home. At bedtime, make sure your room is dark and the air temperature in your home is slightly cool. It’s also difficult to sleep restfully in a messy room, so make sure it’s neat and clean, and keep your bed sheets straightened for comfort.

  3. Wind Down

Many people have trouble falling asleep quickly because they stay too active before bedtime. If possible, schedule work, bill payments, and other mindful activities earlier in the day. You should spend the last hour of your day winding down before bed. Try listening to music or reading to relax your mind.

  4. Turn Off Electronics

Don’t use your wind down time to watch TV or use other electronics like your smartphone. The bright light from these devices stimulates your mind, making sleep less restful. Studies show that even a small amount of light can keep you awake and disrupt your sleep.

  5. Don’t Watch The Clock

When you have insomnia, the clock is not your friend. It’s tempting to check the clock occasionally to see how much time you have left before your alarm sounds, but resist the urge. This simply adds anxiety and frustration, making it even harder to fall asleep. Instead, turn your clock away from your bed and try to think relaxing thoughts.

  6. Establish A Sleep Schedule

You may have trouble with sleep because you wake and sleep at odd hours. If you go to bed or wake at different times each day, your body will have trouble adjusting. To establish a sleep schedule, go to bed at the same time each night and wake at the same time each day, even if you’re still sleepy. Avoid sleeping in on the weekend. If you must, take a power nap instead. Over time, your body will learn to fall asleep naturally at your usual bedtime, and you’ll wake up each morning feeling refreshed.

  7. Watch Your Diet

Caffeine and heavy meals should be avoided as much as possible, but especially in the evenings. Caffeine is a stimulant that will keep you awake, and heavy meals can disturb your sleep. If you need coffee, drink decaf, and if you need a snack, eat fruit or cereal.

  8. Cut Out Noise

Sometimes noises can keep you awake, especially if you live in an apartment or near a highway. Try using white noise to drown out sleep-disruptive sounds. You can use a fan, white noise machine, or an app on your smartphone.
